![]() Still, picture-in-picture, as it’s currently implemented, is quite well-done and shows how you can take advantage of the ever-increasing iPhone display sizes. This doesn’t bode well for my hope that Apple is actively working on split-screen app support. Picture-in-picture didn’t arrive for iPhone users until iOS 14, several years after it probably should have been added as a feature. I often find myself reading travel guides and other content in Safari, then quickly going to the Apple Maps app to look at directions to that location, then bouncing back to Safari to read more. This would allow you to scroll through different locations in Apple Maps while you looked through lists and reviews via Safari. For instance, you could have Safari fill the top half of your iPhone screen and the Notes app fill the bottom half so you can actively reference whatever you’re reading in Safari while taking notes.Īnother potential use case would be to have an app like Apple Maps open alongside Safari app. I can think of a few obvious ways that split-screen multitasking on iPhone would be useful. It’s a really well-done feature that shows a way Apple could do the same. In Mona, you just tap a three-dot button and the app splits itself in half, so one window fills the top half and a second window fills the bottom. ![]() These features, of course, only work in those apps, so you can’t split it between two different apps.įor instance, as MacStories points out, the Mastodon client Mona offers robust split-screen support. Some third-party developers have found clever ways to implement split-screen features in their iPhone apps. This isn’t possible on iPhone, but it should be. But one basic feature that iPadOS handles very well is Split View, which allows you to run two apps side-by side-side for easy access to the information from both apps. On the iPad, multitasking is a bit of a mess in the grand scheme of things. In the era of bigger phone screens – and rumors that phone screens are about to get even bigger – it’s long overdue that Apple adds some sort of split-screen multitasking to the iPhone. It does not store any personal data.As I sit in the Apple Park Visitor Center ahead of tomorrow’s WWDC keynote, I realized there is one last-minute iOS 17 feature request I want to make. It divides your iPhone screen horizontally into two parts, thereby allowing you to shoot two apps at a time! Enough talk let’s discover how it works! It’s available for free and requires iOS 11.2 or later. It lets you use two apps at one go on your iOS device.Ĭurrently, the app supports only a few apps including Instagram, Twitter, Google, YouTube, eBay, Amazon, etc. While looking for a hack to break the shackle, I stumbled upon Splitware a pretty simple iPhone and iPad app. Though not in full-fledged form, there is a way to take some slice out of split view. Aside from boosting your productivity, it would light up the way you use your smartphone. Yeah, using two apps simultaneously on iPhone would be really cool. Wouldn’t it be nice, if you could use Split View on your iPhone as well? Unfortunately, this excellent multitasking feature is designed only for iPad. You can check out your Instagram feed while browsing the web and enjoy a fun-loving YouTube video while making a note. Killing two birds with one stone is the main aspect of Split View.

![]() On October 15, 2008, the Mountain Dew logo was redesigned to "Mtn Dew" within the U.S. Later updates to the logo were made in 1999 and again in 2005. This direction continued as the logo remained the same through the 1970's, 80's and into the late 1990's. PepsiCo (then Pepsi-Cola Company) acquired the Mountain Dew brand in 1964, and shortly thereafter in 1973 the logo was modified as the company sought to shift its focus to a “younger, outdoorsy” generation. The first sketches of the original Mountain Dew bottle labels were devised in 1948 by John Brichetto, and the representation on product packaging has changed at multiple points in the history of the beverage. Early bottles and signage carried the reference forward by showing a cartoon-stylized mountaineer. The name “Mountain Dew” was first trademarked by Ally and Barney Hartman in the 1940's who coined the name from a colloquial term for moonshine whiskey. While Mountain Dew Red was short-lived, it represented the beginning of a long-term trend of Mountain Dew being produced in different flavor variations. Diet Mountain Dew was introduced in 1988, followed in the same year by Mountain Dew Red – which was introduced and later discontinued in 1988. The Mountain Dew brand and production rights were acquired by PepsiCo in 1964, at which point its distribution expanded more widely across the United States.īetween the 1940's and 1980's, Mountain Dew consisted of a single citrus-flavored version. ![]() A revised formula was created by Bill Bridgforth in 1958. The original formula was invented in the 1940's by two Tennessee beverage bottlers, Barney and Ally Hartman. Mountain Dew, currently predominantly stylized as Mtn Dew, is a citrus-flavored carbonated soft drink brand produced and owned by PepsiCo. The Keymaster, for instance, can temporarily place spectral eyes that highlight nearby teenagers. In order to combat the prop system, each of the four playable killers has something in their ability set to help seek out survivors. ![]() Better sightlines across the map, be that through raised geography or windows and gaps, could go a long way toward both aiding the killer and increasing the pace and tension of the game. Reducing the number of these props would dent the fun, though, and so I’d like to see FNTASTIC experiment with map design to find ways to balance out the near-invisibility that comes with turning into a rock. At least in the sole map I’ve been able to play (a classic American farm filled with corn fields and dusty barns) there are stones, soda bottles, and hammers, all of which are top-tier choices since they can be easily hidden in boxes or beneath shelves. They currently feel at a significant advantage over the killer thanks to the large amount of very small props. While survivors do have their vulnerabilities, my initial impression is that their ability to transform into props is an outrageously powerful tool. You’re also forced to return to your human form to repair the machines, a process that takes an achingly long time and so ratchets up the tension. Cepheus ProtocolĪs a survivor, the learning curve demands you master how to effectively disguise yourself in the world, but the urgency provided by a match’s time limit means you can’t simply hide forever. Where Dead by Daylight is a tense game of cat-and-mouse, Propnight is a panicked session of hide-and-seek. This small change has a huge effect on how Pronight plays compared to its apparent inspiration. So long as it’s within your immediate grasp, you can become a clone of pretty much any item you can see. Hear a killer striding towards you? You can vanish by turning into a box and stacking yourself on a shelf run into the corn fields and mimic a scarecrow or even become a cabbage and roll to safety. In Propnight, all survivors have this ability. Originally popularised by a mode for Garry’s Mod, prop hunts allow players to transform into items in order to hide from enemies. It splices the concept with another cult multiplayer favourite: prop hunt. ![]() Propnight isn’t just a straight doppelganger of the streamer darling, though. Repairing the machines even has the same brilliantly tense quicktime events, which if failed cause the gears to sputter and explode, alerting the killer to your location. ![]() I’ve played around a dozen matches and can safely say that if you’re familiar with Dead by Daylight, much of Propnight will be second nature to you. Successfully repairing all five without being killed will open a set of doors through which everyone can escape to victory. Breaking free from this terror realm requires repairing five ‘Propmachines’ before time runs out, with each new device repaired further delaying an unsuccessful end to the match. ![]() The mini golf can actually be quite enjoyable, as your score is not only tied to how many strokes you take, but also to how far the ball actually travels (the greater the distance, the more points you earn, which forces you to think rather creatively about your shots). Mini mode gives you the option to either play a nine-hole course of par-three holes or play mini golf. The mini mode is about as wild as Hot Shots has ever gotten in terms of actual gameplay, though it still feels pretty tame. ![]() Similarly, the tournament mode puts you in competition against a field of 29 other golfers, with the goal of being the player with the lowest stroke count at the end of the 18th hole. ![]() You can choose the versus game, which puts you one-on-one with an artificial intelligence-controlled golfer, and if you can beat the players in match play, they'll become selectable characters in other areas of the game. For the single-player game, there are four basic options. There is something to be said for the familiarity of the digital swing mechanic, but at this point it feels like Hot Shots is bound by tradition rather than progress.įore! makes a few additions to the modes of play available, but it still feels a little stripped down. However, it does nothing for simulating the tactile aspects of swinging a golf club. This mechanic remains functional and can prove challenging, especially when you get to the putting green. Fore! maintains this tradition, and the gameplay is, for all intents and purposes, identical to past Hot Shots games, relying on the same three-click, power meter-based swing mechanic. Hot Shots has always offered a pretty straightforward game of golf, with realistically rendered courses and its motley crew of oddball duffers accounting for much of the series' goofy flavor. Cinch down with a fork or your fingers, and it’s okay if some of the filling comes out. (Cut much bigger rectangles if you want regular-sized pop tarts, as opposed to minis.) Put a little filling-about 3/4 teaspoon-on half the rectangles, then place remaining rectangles on top. If you’ve rolled it thinly enough and use all the dough, you should be able to get 34-38 rectangles. Cut open the bag and slice the dough into rectangles. (For step-by-step photos, see nutrition link below.) Chill at least 20 minutes, or your pop tarts will be crispy. Still in the bag, roll dough into a very, very thin square. Pour crumbly dough into a gallon-sized plastic bag and smush into a ball. In a separate bowl, combine all wet ingredients, then mix wet into dry and stir.

It had also put the first man into orbit - Yuri Gagarin in 1961, just the previous year.īut less than a year after the United States achieved the first successful Moon landing, the axe fell on Apollo. In 1957, the Soviet Union had launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. It was a geopolitical prestige project, a response to the country falling behind in the cold war space race. Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the Moon” speech in September 1962, when he promised that there would be US boots on the lunar soil by the end of the decade. The Apollo programme was brought rousingly to life by US president John F. The reasons lay, above all, in the shifting sands of politics. After the greatest human voyage ever, deep-space exploration just - stopped. They left a plaque that read, in part, “Here man completed his first explorations of the moon, December 1972, A.D.”. Then, late on 14 December, they parked the rover with its television camera pointing at the lander, to broadcast their departure. They put more than 35 kilometres on the odometer of their lunar rover and picked up 110 kilograms of rocks to bring home, the biggest haul of any Apollo mission. ![]() The Moon’s ancient rocks, much less erased by tectonics than those of Earth, could hold the key to a new understanding of the Solar System.Ĭernan and Schmitt spent 3 days in Taurus–Littrow, and more than 22 hours walking and driving around the valley’s landslides and volcanic cinder cones. He had pushed NASA to continue the Apollo programme, arguing that humans could do better science than robot landers. Schmitt, meanwhile, was a geologist - still the only professional scientist to walk on the Moon. Cernan was looking to gain the status of Moon-walker, which he had just missed in 1969 as lunar-module pilot on Apollo 10, the practice run for Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s successful landing with Apollo 11 a couple of months later. But to what end?Īs Cernan and Schmitt guided their lunar module into the narrow Taurus–Littrow valley, each had a personal mission. Humanity is about to make a giant leap again. But with the launch last month of the Artemis I mission, NASA finally seems to be intent on rekindling the glory days of Apollo. The $93-billion plan to put astronauts back on the Moonįor most of the eight billion people now on Earth, the Apollo era is legend the main significance of the photograph of a ‘blue marble’ Earth taken from Apollo 17 is as one of the default iPhone wallpapers. Apollo 17 still marks the last time boots crunched into the soil of an alien world the last time astronauts skipped joyously in the Moon’s low gravity the last time anyone directly witnessed Earth’s blue globe rising above the grey lunar horizon. ![]() But few anticipated that, 50 years on, human exploration of space would be confined to low Earth orbit. When Cernan, fellow Moon-walker Harrison Schmitt and command-module pilot Ronald Evans had blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida seven days earlier, it was already clear that this would be the last Apollo mission. After 50 years, they remain the last (officially prepared) words spoken on the Moon. With Neil Armstrong’s “one giant leap for mankind”, little more than three years earlier, they bookended a grand human endeavour. These words were spoken by Apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan on 14 December 1972, as he prepared to return home from the Moon. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus–Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Credit: NASAĪs I take man’s last step from the surface, back home for some time to come - but we believe not too long into the future - I’d like to just say what I believe history will record: that America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow.
